Jimmy Carter, The Saviour of Middle East Peace, Under Attack

Jimmy Carter is now doing more for America and the world than he did during his stint as President of the United States. Possibly his greatest legacy will be the forcing the issue of Palestinian rights to the forefront. No other politician or public figure has the courage to speak up on the question of whether Israel is as much a victim as they are portrayed to be:
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter defended his harsh criticism of Israeli policy in his latest book, saying he hopes to erode the "impenetrable wall" that blocks the American public from seeing the plight of Palestinians.

For the next few weeks, or months, you will hear many ugly things said about the former Nobel Laureate. Mr. Carter has dared to broach the subject of the practice of apartheid imposed on the Israeli Palestinians. And we will hear the term "anti-semite" used to refer to the former president, among other insults. The powerful Israeli lobby is working overtime to try and smear a good man. Who only wants peace for the people of the Middle East. Debate on the Israeli-Palestinian issue is a taboo subject in America. All those who dare to stray from the official line are savaged in the press. The lobby (as they are known, because of the fear of their power) know that calling someone a racist or anti-semite usually can bring down even the most powerful. It is a powerful tool for silencing any adversary. Just ask Mel Gibson, Trent Lott or Kramer.

But in this case, the truth is finding its way out. Many are beginning to ask why it is that we come to Israel's defense while the rest of the world denounces them every time they commit an atrocity. And many are beginning to put together the connect between the crisis in the Middle East and Israeli policies and our blank check support for them. Jimmy Carter dares to use the A-word: apartheid. The same way Americans are more and more using the term, neocon, to explain why Bush invaded Iraq. And that same public will realize the connection between the two terms. The truth is getting out. And we can thank our man of peace, Jimmy Carter.
