O'Reilly was on the defensive throughout the interview/debate. It is clear that Bill wants to use the David Letterman appearances to increase his popularity. Entertainment industry celebrities are a favorite target of the right. Letterman's personal attacks might've just played into the hands of O'Reilly. The recent attacks by Rush Limbaugh on Michael Fox was another example of a strategy being used by the Right. The Hollywood crowd have made it a habit of hurting their own cause by their lack of political finesse.
