al Qaeda: Is a Terrorism Attack Imminent?
There have not been any major terror attacks in 2006 directed against the West. There was an averted al Qaeda bombing prevented by the British in August that would've been devastating. It could be that al Qaeda's ability to carry out terrorist attacks has been seriously hindered. We don't know for sure.
The anniversary of 9-11 is coming soon and Bin Laden would love nothing more than to carry out another attack after 5 years of his most infamous act. There have been several reports that suggest America is not prepared for another attack. Although the British have been successful in preventing several previous attacks, al Qaeda continues to plot and succeeded once against them. The public believes that another attack on America is only a matter of time. Clearly, al Qaeda wants to carry out another "spectacular" operation. Just today reports coming from Denmark, where several terrorists planned an attack there, suggest al Qaeda is still trying to carry out terror acts against those who support the Iraq War.
As long as that war continues, the number of recruits for attacks will continue to grow. Just like the arrest of Saddam Hussein and Zarqawi did nothing to weaken the insurgency in Iraq, arrests of al Qaeda leaders will do nothing stop terrorism; Others will take their places. New generations of terrorists are plotting and preparing for attacks against the West.
Although the grand prize is America, al Qaeda is willing to attack our allies until they can find the right time to attack us on American soil. It could be that the time is not right. Or it could mean that an operation is in the works. We still do not have an intelligence agency (unlike the British) that keep a track of al Qaeda within the United States (if they are here). We don't know for sure. The Bush gang gets a lot of mileage out pointing to the fact that we have not been attacked since September 11th. What they don't point out is that there was an 8 year period between the two World Trade Center barbarities.
Public opinion will be a major factor in any future attack. I argued in July of 2001 that we were headed for a "disaster" much like "Pearl Harbor" because of our complacency as a society. With the top story this morning being on the death of a crocodile tamer, we are obviously not serious about what is going on in the world. The media cannot be counted on to inform us of the threat from al Qaeda. As a result, the threat of another terrorist attack is less and less of a concern. In addition to terrorism, it can be said about many serious issues that affect our society like: our economy, immigration, lobbying scandals, global warming, oil prices, the threat of plagues (like bird flu, AIDs), etc.
Since none of the conditions that make terrorism possible are being addressed, we will be vulnerable to another attack. This administration has not only failed at fighting al Qaeda terrorism but has done nothing but fan the flames.
