Poll: Clinton Big Lead Among Dems; Giuliani Top Republican
In the most recent CBS poll, almost as many potential voters opppose Hillary Clinton as support her (43 to 38). This is the latest indication that the New York Senator can't win in a general election. Although, it might be enough to win the Democratic nomination since she holds such a large lead among those from her party.
At this point, the only candidate that seems to have a chance at derailing Hillary, is Barack Obama. His problem is name recognition. Almost 2/3rds of voters don't have an opinion of him. Among those who do know him, he has very strong support. He has a year to increase his visibility. The only other candiate who has a chance at dethroning Hillary, would be John Edwards. He has a larger support base among voters than Obama but his negatives are twice that of the Illinois Senator. Edwards has been running since losing in the last election. And he holds a large lead in the important primary State of Iowa.
The big question is whether those large number of undecided Democrats turn to Edwards and Obama. And will Hillary supporters turn away from her. It's her nomination to lose.
And if Hillary wins her parties nomination, it looks like her opponent would most likely be her fellow New Yorker, Rudolph Giuliani. Although he is deadlocked with his main opponent John McCain among overall voters, Giuliani holds a very strong lead among Republicans. It's his nomination to lose.
Eventhough I am a New Yorker, the prospect of either one of those candidates winning the White House leaves me cold.
