Bush Acting Like Dictator by Purging his Generals
When Hitler or Stalins generals failed to do what they were told they were either executed or replaced. Bush doesn't like being contradicted, no matter how wrong he is. This despite statements by Bush to the contrary in where he promised to listen to the advise of his generals. The generals have spoken and Bush isn't listening to a word. Did you really think that ignoring and intimidating generals went out with Donald Rumsfeld?
General George W. Casey Jr., who was the commander in Iraq, and one of the those generals purged (he kicked upstairs to Army chief of staff), "spent much of 2006 pressing for a gradual withdrawal of troops" from Iraq. His replacement, Lt.Gen.David H. Petraeus, is known to support Bush's escalation ("surge") of the war in Iraq. No surprise there. The other important general relieved of his duties, John P. Abizaid, if you'll remember, had the temerity to argue, before Congress - no less, that he was opposed to sending more troops to Iraq and insisting that the war was not going as well as his boss would like everyone to believe (emphasis is mine). He would be replaced by Admiral William J. Fallon, who up till now was over in the Pacific.
Another new addition in this game of musical chairs at the White House, Ryan C. Crocker, would become the new ambassador to Iraq. He replaces Zalmay Khalilzad, who has been nominated as the U.S. ambassador to the UN. And he replaces, neocon John R. Bolton, who made the arrogant mistake of thinking that his ties to his boss George Bush guaranteed his being confirmed for the UN post. And where is Robert Gates in all this? He's locked in his cage, of course. His show of independence during his confirmation hearings, was as I argued, intended only for the purposes of fooling members of Congress to vote for him. You can be assured that he has been muzzled, before he makes the mistake of thinking that he in fact has a say in what goes on in the White House.
This president once demonstrates his total disregard for any view that does not suit his purposes. His current behaviour of ignoring overwhelming public opinion and the views of his own advisers suggests a man who is out of touch with reality. In that sense he is behaving like a dictator or king. And that is very dangerous for our country. How ironic. Our revolution of 200 years ago overthrew the rule of King George.
