Top Senate Republican on Taliban: We Can't Beat Them so Let's Join Them
It was the Taliban that harbored Bin Laden and al Qaeda and made 9/11 possible. We went to war to overthrow that regime. Since then the Taliban have made a comeback. Now we have a shocking admonition from the Senate Majority leader calling for a surrender to the same people who made the attacks of September 11th possible:
Why the surrender?:
What is the evidence of a resurgence of the Taliban?:
It will be interesting to see how many Americans view Frist's words as a surrender (or maybe betrayal) or whether we will allow the Republicans to lie us into submission. There is no other way of viewing this. And given Bush's take-no-prisoner approach to terrorism, makes this particularly hypocritical. This is the same kind of cut-and-run policy that the Bush is fond of bringing up when referring to the Democrats.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan war against Taliban guerrillas can never be won militarily and called for efforts to bring the Islamic militia and its supporters into the Afghan government.
Why the surrender?:
The Tennessee Republican said he learned from briefings that Taliban fighters were too numerous and had too much popular support to be defeated on the battlefield.
What is the evidence of a resurgence of the Taliban?:
According to an Associated Press count, based on reports from U.S., NATO and Afghan officials, at least 2,800 people have been killed nationwide so far this year. The count, which includes militants and civilians, is about 1,300 more than the toll for all of 2005.
