What About Democracy in Afghanistan?

Three years after the overthrow of the Taliban, Afghanistan has progressed very little in the sphere of religious liberty. This can be dramatically exemplified by a death sentence being given to a man for converting to Christianity over a decade ago. Is that what we are fighting for over there?

We hear plenty about how we went into Iraq to create a democracy. Little is said about Afghanistan. It seems there is less concern about what kind of government exists there. The fact that the Afghani constitution calls for death for anyone who doesn't adhere to Islam shows that fact. The Taliban were notorious for an inhuman intolerance of religious freedom. It would almost seem they were still in control. In fact, recently the insurgency in Afghanistan has grown in strength.

Why would the U.S. authorities allow such intolerance to still exist in the Afghani constitution? Does the administration care? They don't. Afghanistan is an afterthought. The preoccupation with the occupation is all directed towards Iraq. Not much oil in Afghanistan. If the Bush crowd isn't careful we could see the return of the Taliban, which means the return of al Qaeda.
