Pace Leaving, Lieberman Statement Proof War with Iran is Coming

It is now clear that the decision to attack Iran is coming. Senator Lieberman's statement Sunday is the clearest indication that the neocons are preparing for war:

“I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,” Lieberman said. Host Bob Schieffer followed-up: “Let’s just stop right there. Because I think you probably made some news here, Senator Lieberman. You’re saying that if the Iranians don’t let up, that the United States should take military action?” “I am,” Lieberman responded.

Unless you are naive enough to believe that Lieberman was speaking for himself, the threat is unmistakable. If you are not convinced, take a look at the removal of General Pace. There is speculation his departure arose from opposition to a war with Iran rather than any fear of a contentious confirmation hearing; unless you are also naive in thinking that Pace leaving had something to do with the fear that Pace would be yelled at by Democrats:

I’ve been writing for over a year now that the Joint Chiefs have been blocking the White House’s efforts to expand the war to Iran. No matter what you might think of Gen. Pete Pace, this really is TERRIFYING news, unless you crave a wider war in the Persian Gulf and South Asia.

There are other indications. Israel has never wavered from its desire to take revenge against Hezbollah for its perceived defeat in Lebanon last year. They realise that any war with Hezbollah would necessarily involve Syria and Iran. Here is an opportunity to deal with all countries involved:

The regime heads in Tehran are basing their common front with Damascus on intelligence reports whereby the US and Israel have drawn up plans for coordinated military action against Iran, Syria and Hezbollah in the summer.

According to this hypothesis, Iranian leaders foresee the next UN Security Council in New York at the end of June or early July ending with an American announcement that the sanctions against Tehran are inadequate because Russia and China has toned them down. Therefore, the military option is the only one left on the table. The ayatollahs have concluded that US president George W. Bush is determined to bow out of office on the high note of a glittering military success against Iran to eclipse his failures in Iraq.

It all makes sense unless you believe that Bush and Cheney somehow have ended their war mongering ways. You really think they will suffer Iran thumbing their noses at the big and bad occupants of the White House.
