Media Holds Kidnap Victim Hostage
Shawn Hornbeck just went through 4 years of hell at the hands of a fiend, only to victimized again by a media that doesn't care about his welfare:
The sensationalistic media are falling all over each other trying to get the "exclusive" interview. And already there is the speculation about why didn't Shawn try to escape. Why not let the boy spend some time with his parents first. Any psychologist would say that something as traumatic as an abduction that last for years might cause serious mental harm to that child. He should be evaluated and allowed to get a sense of normalcy with the family he hasn't seen for years.
Instead the media vultures come swooping down to get their piece of the action. Meantime, they forget the real point of this whole tragedy: There are more Shawn Hornbeck's and Ben Owenby's out there. What do we do to save them? How do we prevent this from happening again? How were these boys not spotted sooner by their neighbors? Doesn't that say something about our society? These are questions that are not being asked. Tragically, we have an epedemic of children being taken off the streets of America. Where is the outrage? Certainly the media doesn't care.
The 15-year-old Richwoods boy broke his public silence in an interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” six days after being rescued along with another Missouri kidnap victim, Ben Ownby, from their suburban St. Louis captor.
