Iraqi Refugees: The Forgotten Victims, Our Disgrace
Watching C-Span this morning I was shocked to learn that 100,000 Iraqis per month were fleeing the country, mostly into Syria and Jordan. The guest, Sean Garcia, Refugees International, described how the U.S. took in very few refugees eventhough we were largely responsible for the situation. I was surprised to hear that U.S. ally Jordan was more restrictive than the Syrians in the number of refugees they took in. The Bush administration wants to the seal the border with Syria. Does that mean the Iraqis trying to flee the country will stopped at the border? How ironic.
One has to ask the question: Are the Iraqis better off because of the invasion and overthrow of Sadddam Hussein? Given the number of innocent people being slaughtered (34,000 last year) and the hundreds of thousands of refugess, the answer is clearly--no.
