The Chinese Internet dissident and blogger, He Weihua, has been committed to a mental hospital. The organisation Reporters without Borders (ROG) protested on Friday against the sanction, which had been imposed, according to information from relatives in the Hunan Province, as a result of his regime-critical postings in Internet forums. "It is not acceptable that Chinese authorities use such methods to silence citizens who have merely peacefully voiced their opinions", expressed the organisation in an announcement. Apparently authorities have not abandoned the practice of punishing those who have exposed the abuse of power and defied censorship by compulsorily committing them to mental institutions.
He Weihua was subpoenaed and arrested at the beginning of the month after he published an Internet article in July, which not only criticised the increase in pork prices in China, but also predicted the collapse of the Communist Party due to corruption. A relative reported that He Weihua is not at all suffering from insanity. He has written a substantial amount of articles about human rights for the regime-critical website Boxun, which has been blocked in China by the board of censors. He Weihua had already been committed to a psychiatric clinic in December 2004, reported Reporters without Borders. In 2006 he barely escaped being run over by a motorcycle driver, who demanded that he discontinue his human rights activities.
