Richard Jewell: Hero Turned Terrorist by Media, FBI Found Dead

Richard Jewell should be remembered as a hero who saved unknown numbers of people attending the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. Instead, he will always be known as the suspect in the bombing at the games that killed 1 person. He was robbed of that well deserved glory by an incompetent FBI and equally irresponsible media. It was a terrible injustice. Even until his death neither the government nor a unapologetic press attemtpted to undo that injustice. Richard Jewell will be forgotten because of the foolishness of those in power:
Richard Jewell, the former security guard who was erroneously linked to the 1996 Olympic bombing, died today, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Jewell, 44, was found dead in his west Georgia home, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said.

"There's no suspicion whatsoever of any type of foul play. He had been at home sick since the end of February with kidney problems," said Meriwether County Coroner Johnny Worley.

The Times did him some justice by mentioning the injustice:
Richard A. Jewell, whose transformation from heroic security guard to Olympic bombing suspect and back again came to symbolize the excesses of law enforcement and the news media, died Wednesday at his home in Woodbury, Ga. He was 44.

He did get some apology:
Last year, Mr. Jewell received a commendation from Gov. Sonny Perdue, who publicly thanked him on behalf of the state for saving lives at the Olympics.

Not enough, though.
